A mini Goldendoodle is a Golden Retriever crossed with a miniature Poodle. You will see them described by generation, and the generation tells you how much Poodle is in the mix. An F1 is half Golden Retriever and half Poodle. An F1B is a Goldendoodle bred back to a Poodle, so roughly 75 percent Poodle - curlier coat, lower shedding, and smaller. F1BB and multi-generational doodles go further still, which is how breeders get consistently small dogs with consistently low-shedding coats. If shedding is your main concern, look for F1B or higher. A full grown mini Goldendoodle weighs 20 to 35 pounds and stands 14 to 17 inches at the shoulder. Most reach full height by about 9 to 11 months and fill out to their adult weight by 12 to 14 months. Males usually finish a few pounds heavier than females from the same litter. The most reliable predictor of adult size is the weight of the two parents, so ask any breeder for the sire and dam weights before you commit. A rough rule of thumb: a mini Goldendoodle puppy at 16 weeks is close to half its adult weight.
Typical weights for a mini Goldendoodle that will finish around 28 pounds: 8 weeks, 5 to 8 pounds. 12 weeks, 9 to 13 pounds. 16 weeks, 13 to 17 pounds. 6 months, 19 to 24 pounds. 9 months, 24 to 29 pounds. 12 months, 26 to 32 pounds, at or near full size. Growth is fastest between 8 and 16 weeks and slows sharply after six months. If your puppy is tracking noticeably above or below this range, it usually means the adult weight will land above or below 28 pounds - not that anything is wrong.
Mini Goldendoodles typically cost $1,500 to $4,000 from a breeder nationally. Our mini and micro Goldendoodle puppies are $2,500 to $5,500, and size is not what sets the price - a mini and a micro out of our program are priced the same way. Where a puppy lands in that range comes down to genetics, lineage, coat, generation, and rights. A puppy going home with full breeding rights is priced above the same puppy on a pet-only contract. A price well under $1,500 almost always means the parents were never health tested, and that saving tends to reappear later as a vet bill. Mini Goldendoodles are friendly, eager to please, and easy to train - the Golden Retriever brings the patience and the Poodle brings the intelligence. They are patient with children, get along with other dogs and cats, and are usually welcoming to strangers, which makes them poor guard dogs and excellent family dogs. Expect a moderately high energy level: 45 to 60 minutes of exercise a day, split into a couple of walks plus play. They also want company. A mini Goldendoodle left alone all day, every day, is the one most likely to develop separation anxiety and chew through something expensive.
Mini Goldendoodles shed very little, and how little depends on the coat. Curly coats shed the least and are the best choice for allergy households. Wavy coats, the most common, shed lightly. Straight or flat coats shed the most and are the closest to a Golden Retriever. Coat type follows generation, so an F1B or multi-gen puppy is a safer bet than an F1 if shedding is the deciding factor. Low shedding is not low maintenance, though - brush three or four times a week and book a professional groom every six to eight weeks, or the coat mats and has to be shaved.
Mini Goldendoodles live 12 to 16 years, several years longer than a standard Goldendoodle. Health starts with the parents, and every parent in our program is DNA tested and cleared before we breed, so inherited conditions are screened out before a litter is ever planned. A micro Goldendoodle, also called toy or petite, finishes at 8 to 20 pounds and 9 to 14 inches tall; teacup describes the smallest end of that scale, around 5 to 13 pounds. A mini Goldendoodle finishes at 20 to 35 pounds and 14 to 17 inches. A standard Goldendoodle finishes at 45 to 90 pounds and 20 to 26 inches. Temperament and coat are similar across all three, so the decision comes down to your home and how sturdy a dog you need. Minis are the middle ground most families land on: small enough for a townhouse, sturdy enough for young kids, and long-lived.
